Four times, an organisation had no architecture function. Four times, we built one and handed it over.
Kabir Vaderaa · Programme Director & Enterprise Architect · Cork
Building functions that outlast the engagement.
Kabir Vaderaa has spent 25 years being the person an organisation calls when a technology programme has grown past the point where nobody is actually governing it. Vaderaa Consulting, the independent practice he runs from Cork, is built around that one recurring job: arriving with no architecture function, no review board, and no design standards in place, and leaving with all three still running after he's gone.
He works alone, deliberately. No account managers between you and the work, no bench of juniors learning on your programme. That's the trade a client is making: fewer bodies in the room, but every decision made or reviewed by someone who has carried the consequences of it before, in sectors — payment, energy, transport, clinical software — where getting it wrong is not a recoverable mistake.
Fourteen years at Abtran took him from sole developer to Chief Architect, building that company's first formal architecture team along the way. Independent since 2017, his first engagement was I-SEM at Bord Gáis Energy: architecture across trading, settlements, and reporting for the Day 1 Go-Live of Ireland's new all-island electricity market — plus, in the gaps since, two interim CIO stints at smaller firms that needed the same thing at a smaller scale.
He's been Head of Architecture at the National Transport Authority since 2019, which is where the pattern shows most clearly. There was no formal architecture discipline anywhere in the organisation when he arrived — a national transport body running major technology programmes with nobody accountable for how the pieces fit together. He built the review boards, the design standards, the cloud governance, and the team that now runs all of it, and has stayed on since to extend that same discipline across corporate systems, finance, and — most recently — AI.
